Comfortable Sedation Dentistry at Valley Oral Surgery in Livermore and Dublin, CA

Valley Oral Surgery offers multiple sedation options to ensure a safe, relaxed experience during oral surgery.

Anxiety-Free Oral Surgery Is Possible

It’s normal to feel nervous about oral surgery—especially if you’ve had a difficult dental experience in the past, are preparing for a complex procedure, or simply want added peace of mind. To support your comfort, we offer a full range of sedation options for eligible patients. Sedation is available for most oral surgeries, including dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, tooth extractions, bone grafting procedures, and facial trauma repair. All sedation is carefully administered by our experienced oral surgeons in a safe, medically monitored environment, so you can receive the care you need without fear or discomfort.

Minimal & Moderate Sedation

Minimal & Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation includes options such as oral conscious sedation, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and local anesthetic. This approach is ideal for less invasive procedures or patients with mild anxiety. You remain awake but relaxed, with normal breathing and protective reflexes fully maintained. Recovery is typically quick, and you’re able to respond throughout treatment. Moderate sedation is often recommended for patients undergoing basic extractions, biopsies, or shorter procedures.

General Anesthesia Options

General Anesthesia Options

General anesthesia is typically reserved for longer or more complex procedures, as well as for patients with significant anxiety or special needs. It may be provided in-office with local anesthesia support or in a hospital or surgery center under the care of a medical anesthesiologist. Under general anesthesia, you are completely asleep and unaware of the procedure. This option is often recommended for the surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth, multiple extractions, full-mouth implant surgery, and for patients with physical or developmental disabilities.

How We Prioritize Safety

At Valley Oral Surgery, sedation is never one-size-fits-all. We carefully evaluate your:

  • Medical history and medications
  • Surgical needs
  • Anxiety level and preferences
  • Insurance coverage and cost considerations

Our surgeons — Anna Lu, DMD and Jimmy Tung Nguyen, DDS, MD — are licensed and trained in anesthesia administration. Our office meets California safety standards for sedation and general anesthesia, and all vital signs are closely monitored throughout your procedure.

What to Expect Before and After Sedation

Before Sedation:

  • You’ll receive fasting and medication guidelines
  • Arrange a driver to bring you and stay with you afterward
  • We’ll review all risks, benefits, and instructions in advance

After Sedation:

  • Most patients feel drowsy for a few hours
  • No driving, work, or major decisions for 24 hours (IV or general sedation)
  • You’ll receive written aftercare instructions and direct follow-up

Sedation enhances comfort and helps ensure your surgical procedure is completed efficiently, with minimal stress.

Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation may be appropriate for patients who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or phobia
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Are undergoing longer or multiple procedures
  • Have difficulty getting numb with local anesthetic alone
  • Have developmental, cognitive, or medical conditions that make standard treatment difficult

We’ll help you select the most appropriate and safest level of sedation for your specific needs.

FAQs: Sedation Dentistry at Valley Oral Surgery

Is sedation safe?

Yes. When administered by trained professionals, dental sedation is considered very safe. We continuously monitor your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels throughout the procedure.

Will I be awake during sedation?

That depends on the type of sedation. Minimal and moderate sedation allow you to remain awake but deeply relaxed, while general anesthesia puts you fully asleep.

How long does it take to recover?

Most patients recover from minimal or moderate sedation within a few hours. General anesthesia may take up to 24 hours for the effects to fully wear off.

Can children receive sedation?

Yes. With proper screening and precautions, children can receive sedation. Younger or special-needs patients often benefit from general anesthesia in a hospital setting.

Will my insurance cover sedation?

Some insurance plans cover sedation for surgical procedures. Our team will help review your benefits and provide a clear cost estimate before treatment begins.
